Shattered Eyes
I saw someone that I love
Enjoy something that will kill them
I saw someone that I love
Look at things that will break them apart
Into so many fragmented pieces
That they won’t even realize
They’re a broken mess
Until it’s too late for anyone
But God
To put them back together again
I saw someone that I love
Sell their body for money
I saw someone that I love
Use their flesh for applause
I saw someone that I love
Do things they called liberation
But I knew it was a cage
Have you ever chosen something
You knew would kill you?
Have you ever looked at something
You knew would rot you?
Have you ever lied to yourself
And said it would all be ok
When you knew it wouldn’t?
We are all doing everything we do
To try to survive and to try to thrive
And to try to fill the void inside
It’s so vast we’d need an ocean
Of empty addictions
To swallow it up whole
We’re all just trying to
Fill the void inside
With lies
And then we wonder
Why our eyes are
Shattered
Why we can’t see anything anymore
I saw someone I love
Drink poison and call it love
And I’m reeling with the
Heaviness of it all
Only God can save us now
Ps. It’s hard to be the one singing the sad songs. Everyone wants a happy ending. And, ultimately, there really is a happy ending. But maybe being honest about the horrific middle parts of the story is just as valid as being honest about the happy endings and beautiful redemptions. Maybe this part of the story needs to be told just as honestly as the rest. Only when we come face to face with the depth of the darkness inside us, and inside this world, can we truly know the goodness of God. And the goodness of the Gospel.
