Burial Ground

We're all in a hurry to get nowhere fast,
Rushing along just so we won't be last.
The goal is to just get ahead of the crowd,
So we push and we fight and we make our voice loud!

But what if I told you there's a place that I've found,
That is peaceful and quiet and nearly profound.
And I got there by falling much too far behind,
Letting all my dreams crumble - my ambitions unwind...

And after some time feeling sorry for myself,
I looked up with surprise at a quiet old elk.
He turned and walked casually into the wood,
And I followed him cause I had time and I could.

Life became sweeter as we went along,
Like the quietest part of a peaceful, long song.
Every footstep infused with a deep sense of purpose,
Like a diver's slow push on his way to the surface.

I followed him there for the rest of my life,
Till I came to my end like the cut of a knife.
And as my eyes closed, I remember a sound,
And tears spilled like wonder cause I knew that I'd found,

Everything I had longed for - the place I'd been bound,
And my new life began there at burial ground.
