My Need for Him
God made us with needs because we need Him.
Almost a third of our lives are spent sleeping... resting. We can't live long without consistent nourishment and food flowing into our bodies like a never ending stream of life. Our bodies themselves require careful attention - washing, clothing, exercising. And we spend almost all our time working to provide for our own needs along with those of our children and spouses.
We are much more high maintenance then we like to let on.
Humility is realizing I have countless needs and I can't even begin to meet a single one of them on my own. I need help. I need God. I need you.
Jesus knows how needy we are. He came to fill that gaping hole of never ending neediness with His never ending abundance. He is the living water, the bread of life, the body and the blood.
Before He went to the cross, one of the most significant things He did was hold a loaf of bread in His hands, give thanks for it, break it, and pass it to His disciples saying, "This is my body broken for you - take and eat". And lifting a glass of wine in His hands, blessing it, and saying, "This is my blood... drink it in remembrance of me" (paraphrased).
He became the sustenance we needed in order to survive. His body was broken and His blood was spilled so that we could take and eat and, in the eating, to live.
Communion is ingesting the truth, over and over again, that "I need you Jesus. I can't live without you." He is the source of life and He is all we need to live.
I want to remember this everyday - that I can't live without Him and He is the life inside my veins.
