Why We are Unworthy of Revival
"Thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: 'I dwell in the high and holy places with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite one." Isaiah 57:15
The High and Lofty One. Who inhabits eternity - who lives within Forever. Whose name is Holy. Wow.
This is our God and this is what he says:
He dwells in the high and holy places - the places that are beyond our reach and are so pure and perfect that we could never dream of going there.
But wait.
The High and Lofty One, whose name is Holy says that it is not just Himself that inhabits eternity - who dwells in the high and holy places. There are others there as well.
With the Holy One are those who have a contrite and humble spirit. Up in the high and holy places, where no man would dare to go, are men and women of earth. This alone is beyond comprehension - that The One Whose Name is Holy would invite others into his holy and high places with him.
But these are not just any men and women. They are those with a contrite and humble spirit. Those who know they are unworthy to step into these high and holy places are the very ones whom the High and Lofty one wants with Him. Those who fall before him and say, "I am a man of unclean lips!". Those who dare not look upon the Holy One and bow in utter fear and trembling - knowing full well what they deserve.
These are the ones the High and Lofty One invites into His inner courts. The very people who know in there heart of hearts that they have no hope of entering in - who have given up hope of ever being good enough to be near Him who in Perfection - these are the ones He is glad to invite in.
And why does he invite them in?
To revive them. To bring them Revival. The High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity itself - who walks through all time and place and eternity- he invites in those who do not dare ask to come so that he can revive them. Revive means to bring back to life again. To resurrect.
And it's so much like the Lord to bring revival to those who weep in the corner - those who know they are unworthy to receive it even if it does come. It is so much like the Lord to leave those who know they are oh-so-worthy outside of his high and holy places, and to bring in those who stand far, far off - knowing that it would be injustice itself for them to be received in. It is so much like the Lord to bring high the low things of the earth and to bring low the high ones.
I am one who asks for revival knowing that I deserve it. Oh Lord forgive me! We do not deserve your Revival in our land! We do not deserve your goodness poured out upon us! But yet we long for it like water in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Lord, show us our utter unworthiness before you - that we may be worthy of dwelling in your high and holy places with you.
Let us be worthy of revival - by knowing we are unworthy.
