The Girl and the Pearls

When she was a girl, she had lost her pearls...
Her father took them from round her neck
And had thrown them into the sea.

Now she's all but grown and lives all alone
Dreaming to find
Something she doesn't know.
Her memory's faded, her story's a blur,
All she knows is a longing
Deep within her stirs.
She stands on the shoreline of vast mysteries,
And begs them to tell of
Her past histories.
"Come deeper, come deeper..." the wind and waves blow,
"I'll show you the secrets
No one could have known..."
Her longing it draws her, like unquenched desire,
Pulling her closer
Like the heat of a fire.
She steps then she runs, her hair coming undone,
She dives through the blackness
The seeking's begun.
"Come deeper, come deeper..." the waters allure,
And she follows their trail
Ever strong, ever sure.
The black turns to blue and the blue becomes clear
A light deep below her
Calls and beckons her near.
Pure and pulsing and bright, her longing is sight,
The beauty of all beauties
Fills her with delight.
Her pearls, there they were, lying deep down below,
And though they had not before,
Now brilliant they glowed.
"Come closer, come closer..." strong and sweetly they sang,
"We're so glad you've come!
We're so glad you came!"
"We know you have missed us like nothing you've known,
And we've called you to find us
In the deep, dark unknown."
She scooped them up gently, held them to her heart,
And she saw her whole life
Like a painting of art.
Her father had found her - a child of the sea,
He'd taken her home
His daughter to be.
But the pearls round her neck sang her songs of her birth,
Led her back to the waves,
To hear of her worth.
He'd seen and he'd raged - and a war he had waged,
To keep her with him
Like a bird in a cage.
Her pearls he had stolen, thrown them to the sea,
And she'd grown up believing
It had all been a dream.
But now she was home - her story she'd been shown,
And the waves raised their voices,
"Come, we'll show you your throne!"
